Dining Room Hutch Re-Do

Ever since we moved into our house (over a year ago), I've been looking for the perfect hutch for the dining room.  I bought one of those 80's maple hutches that you see all over Craigslist in hopes that I would end up painting it.  It sat undone for about a year.  I didn't really like it.  Our ceilings are 9' high, and it didn't fit the space well.  I needed something bigger.

So, I kept an eye out and pretty much stalked every posting on CL.  THEN I found it.  This is what I got...(two weeks after I had our second baby)...HA!

For $150....I could TOTALLY work with this.  I emailed her and she gave me her phone number if I was serious.  Within minutes, I called her back asking for dimensions.  It was long.  And tall.  And would fit the wall I wanted it on PERFECTLY!  :)  SOLD!  I told her I would leave right then to come get it!

Here's how it looked when I got it in the house.  I didn't know how to decorate it, and frankly, it just wasn't a huge priority.  Sleep was.  If you've had a baby, you can totally relate.

A little too 'plain jane' for me.  So then I searched and searched for the perfect paint color.  I wanted something that was a gray-blue.  Not too turquoise.  Not too gray.  Not too blue.  And then I ran into Thrify Decor Chick's blog.  She just re-did her kitchen island again.  Something I TOTALLY would do too!  HA!!  I LOVED the color she chose:

Sherwin Williams: Jubilee (SW6248)

So after I took my kids in to the pediatrician for wellness checks (4-months and 3 years old), we headed over to Sherwin Williams.  I got a 'quart to go' -- which only comes in a satin finish, for $6 plus tax.  And I got the whole hutch painted with leftover paint.  Here's how it turned out:

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!  It's EXACTLY what I was going for, and SUCH a statement piece that catches your eye as soon as you walk through our front door!  :)

Now, I'm sure ya'll may want to know about everything in the picture, so I'll break it down for you.

Hutch: $150 -- found on Craigslist.

Plates: $1 each -- bought at The Dollar Store.  I bought 8 square plates and 8 salad plates to give it the layered look.

Apples & Pears: Pier 1 on clearance.  Click here for the link right to them.  Then, I spray painted them Oil Rubbed Bronze.

Sign on top of hutch:  I made it.  The inspiration came from here (something I found on Pinterest).  Here's a screen shot since I can't find it on the blog anymore...

Glass candle hurricanes:  Made from three pieces.  A candle holder, a glass vase and a tall candle that was in a glass jar.  ALL from The Dollar Store.  Here's a tutorial on what to buy and how to make them.

I'm thinking that picture you have sitting to the left of the hutch might look good hung next to it? It has some blue in the dress...just a thought! Looks terrific girl!
